Beiber Appreciation

Okay, I fought it and I haven't even seen "NEVER SAY NEVER," but  you have to admit, love him or hate him... this is probably the most precious thing ever:

Fill in the Blank Friday (on Saturday)

1.   My biggest accomplishment in life thus far is   discovering myself and BEING myself. I feel it really took losing myself to find myself, but I've been able to accomplish so much, love so deeply and live so fully since I discovered what it meant to be myself and not being afraid to be that woman. Also, but no less importantly, the relationships I've cultivated. I'm proud of the way I treat my friends and that makes me feel good.

2.  My favorite place to sit in my house is   my living room!

3.  My fashion philosophy is  in still being formulated! I'm all about the classic clean look, but working on refining my look at the moment.

4.  Something every girl should have is   a nice sleek pair of black stilettos.

5.  If you looked in my purse right now you'd find....   way too much stuff. Whatever I'm reading at the moment, my giant wallet, pink bag of random things like hair ties and chapstick, Dr. Scholl's Flats in a Flash, my camera, my flip camera and a bunch of other random stuff. It weighs about as much as a small child and causes neck pain, but oh well. It's cute and functional.

6.  My favorite music right now is  I'm still loving The Civil Wars, NEEDTOBREATHE, and Mumford and Sons presently.

7.  My favorite part of my body is  my smile (I realize that's not one part, but we'll just go with it. And my hair. I love my hair.

Happy Friday all!! To join in visit  The little things we do

Sam's Sushi

We recently discovered a new place to eat in Nashville and it's DELICIOUS and has tons of character:

Sam's Sushi

Sam, the owner, is a sometimes-cranky, sometimes-sweet, always-sassy man from Japan and he is awesome. He kicks people out if he doesn't like them and always has some unsolicited life advice or political insight to share.

Usually I'm not the biggest fan of sushi, but the BBQ Eel roll is amazing!

I love finding little gems like this. Nashville is my favorite.

Ma Boyfriend's Back

J. L. went home last week to visit his parents and I'm very glad that he's back now!
We spent time working out together last night and just hanging out watching the final episode of The Bachelor and I realize a few somethings that I love about our relationship.

I love that he's one of my best friends.
I love who I am when I'm with him and I love how I feel when we're together.
I love that neither of us are perfect, but I love that we're working towards our own goals and to love God and those around us.
I love that my heart and my mind feel in harmony about this whole relationship.
I love that our life is not a fairy tale, but that I'm happy with real life with him.

So at the risk of being overly mushy, I wanted to just want to say that today it feels good to feel good.

Butterbeer Recipe!

Have you ever wondered what butterbeer is like? Try this recipe from tastespoon.com!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup light or dark brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 6 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cider vinegar
  • 3/4 cup heavy cream, divided
  • 1/2 teaspoon rum extract
  • 4 12 ounce bottles cream soda

Directions

  1. In a small saucepan over medium, combine the brown sugar and water. Bring to a gentle boil and cook, stirring often, until the mixture reads 240 F on a candy thermometer.
  2. Stir in the butter, salt, vinegar and 1/4 of the heavy cream. Set aside to cool to room temperature.
  3. Once the mixture has cooled, stir in the rum extract.
  4. In a medium bowl, combine 2 tablespoons of the brown sugar mixture and the remaining 1/2 cup of heavy cream. Use an electric mixer to beat until just thickened, but not completely whipped, about 2 to 3 minutes.
  5. To serve, divide the brown sugar mixture between 4 tall glasses (about 1/4 cup for each glass). Add 1/4 cup of cream soda to each glass, then stir to combine. Fill each glass nearly to the top with additional cream soda, then spoon the whipped topping over each.

Serving Saturday & Stories

A few times a year my church has what we call Serving Saturdays where we go and volunteer in mass amounts to help local ministries/nonprofits in our area. This morning my sister and I spent our Serving Saturday painting apartments for some women at Mending Hearts which is a ministry for women who are facing homelessness due to addiction, mental illness or other emotional issues.

As always, my favorite part was talking to the women living there, but I was struck by something today. It was so interesting to me that ALL of the women there were very eager to tell us their stories. Within in minutes of meeting a woman named Natalie, she told me that February was a really bad month for her. Her brother died, it was the anniversary of her grandmother's death, she missed her baby girl and she was having a difficult time with other family members. "It's not an excuse," she said, "but I relapsed after two years of being sober and clean."

After I left, I realized that I've had a similar experience with ex-prostitutes and men in prison: they always want you to know what they're struggling with and how they got there.

I spent some time thinking today about why that is and I really think that it stems from our God-given desire to be known. Whether we know it or not, we long for community and understanding and, in my experience, those among us with the more obvious problems (meaning those who admit them) are always the first to reach out. I love being around people who are willing to be real and admit their faults because instead of fear and judgment that leads to fake, guarded conversations, we finally experience genuine connection. Even though there are those among us who are not so eager to be transparent and honest about our stories, or who are even simply just afraid to share them, we all have the same desires, deep down, to be known and loved for who we are, flaws and all.

Maybe that's why I'm so into people's stories. I really believe that our stories make up who we are and when we share our stories we begin to create a deeper sense of understanding of spirit we're encountering. Stories tell us who we are, who we were and where we want to go.

After that revelation, however, it occurred to me the sheer volume of people who are trapped inside their homes, or out on the streets, who are feeling unknown and unloved. Today I want to encourage you, as well as myself, to push deeper and really get to know those around you. Reach out! We've all got stories to tell and I bet when you hear someone's story that somehow they'll become a part of your own. What's more, I bet you won't regret it!

Being unwanted, unloved, uncared for, forgotten by everybody, I think that is a much greater hunger, a much greater poverty than the person who has nothing to eat.   -Mother Teresa

Stylish Blogger Award

Chrissy in America was sweet enough to award me with the stylish blogger award. I'm flattered!

The rules are as follows:
  • Thank the person and link back to her
  • Share seven things about yourself
  • Pass the award on to other bloggers and let them know you did

Here's some fun facts about me:
1. I once fell down a mountain naked. Yes. It's true. I was in middle school (and yes, completely sober, since everyone asks.) I was SO embarrassed, but now I love the story!
2. This is my favorite song (and twitter handle)
3. Right now I'm reading Lit by Mary Karr. I love memoirs.
4. I get energized by doing things that matter.
5. Mexican food is the way to my heart.
6. I've been giving up sugar for the last few weeks. It's so hard!!
7. I'm very soft spoken and because of it I think that a lot of people think I'm shy, but I'm one of the most outgoing people I know!

I would like to pass this on to:
1. Anna at What Anna Loves
2. Kim at Yellow Song Bird
3. Vic and Freckles and Fudge

Lovely Lemon

My favorite dessert is by far lemon bars.
Yum.
So this week I decided to take the time to make myself a batch and while I feel very a little guilty about the amount of extra calories I consumed, I think this was totally worth it.

I was never a fan of yellow, but after all of the dreary weather in Nashville the bright colors make me EVEN MORE ready for Spring.
Who's with me!

Painted Glass

I love mason jars and other glass containers I can find at Good Will, but I recently discovered how to add a pretty pale color that makes them extra beautiful.

The trick? Mod Podge and food coloring!

I can't wait to make a few of these:

Three Things I Heart

3. I have super thick hair, which is awesome, but sometimes hard to manage. . . until now. I use one pump of this and my hair is silky smooth and super manageable. Try it! You'll like it!

2. Style Me Pretty. I'm not engaged nor am I planning on getting married anytime in the very near future, but I will admit that I love looking and wedding pictures. (I always have.) I like to think of them as really pretty parties and someday I'd love to dabble in wedding planning as a side business. Who knows. If you haven't been there, feel free to indulge.

1.
Surprise lunch dates at Noshville Deli. Yum!

Postcard Coffee Mug

I was poking around on Etsy today and saw this. I love it. If I had fifty extra dollars I'd totally get it, but a girl can dream!

Jump, Jive and Then You Wail

My sweet boyfriend, lovely sister and I took a trip down to a local church where they do swing dancing every other weekend. We had a lot of fun, but quickly realized that swing dancing at a church is code for single-men-over-forty-wanting-to-meet-girls swing dancing at a church. Oh well. We still had fun. Now that Jennifer has a boyfriend (I approve of this one, finally) maybe we'll go back again, but we took turns dancing with Twinkle-Toes J. L. and every time the other sat down a different guy asked us to dance. I did enjoy dancing with an older friend I know from my church, but the rest were just painfully awkward.
What are you gonna do?

Sister and J. L.
I love him
Sista love
The lighting was really bad so a few of these are grainy!

Tada!
