Breakfast with the Fam

This morning I enjoyed a lovely breakfast at the Pfunky Griddle with my cute little family.
What's the Pfunky Griddle, you say?
Well, I'm glad you asked!
It's this super cute pancake place where you cook the pancakes (or french toast, eggs, etc) on the table right in front of you! Yum!!

Look at my precious parents. Aren't they cute? They're such a blessing!

Sista love!

I love this whole concept of experiential meals.

Jennifer made some great french toast.

I'm so grateful for my family and I love them so much :)
It was nice to share a meal like old times today.

My Next Big Project

My new apartment has a really long hallway and and at the moment it's completely bare,
but I'm thinking of doing something along the lines of this:

I love the blue walls with the black tree decoration and b&w pictures with different frames.

Do you like it?

I've been searching on etsy for a removable black tree/design like the one in the pictures above, but I haven't found one that works just yet. Any ideas?

My Trip to Mobile

As promised, here are a few shots from my conference in Mobile!
I was bummed that we never got a chance to go to the beach, but my coworker and I didn't let that stop us from having fun.

Look at these cool trees! We don't have these in Nashville!

We were on the 21st floor.

Look! We found some southern belles! I saw them and had to take a picture.

  Cruise, anyone?

My coworker and I went on a sightseeing tour and really enjoyed the historic buildings

I had gumbo for the first time and it was amazing! Who knew?

ALSO, did you know that they celebrate Mardi Gras in Mobile, AL?
I loved this little candy store called Three Georges. It had delicious candy!

I learned a lot and had a good time getting to know my coworker by sharing meals, going shopping and sharing our stories. Can't wait for my next trip!

Wonderful Quote

When I have meetings with my students I usually put some sort of inspirational quote at the bottom. This week while searching I found this gem:

"There has never been a statue erected to honor a critic." - Zig Ziglar

I really needed to hear that.

Remember that as you go on through your week! Be exactly who you were meant to be and don't let the criticism of others hold you back from being great. I know it's in you!

Valentine's Date Night

Since I was going to leave on Tuesday morning and had to work a lot last weekend, we decided to do our Valentine's Day celebration last night and had such a good time!

We enjoyed a lovely (and fancy) dinner at the 1808 Grille.
I had a lemon souffle pudding for dessert. Definitely the highlight.

Went home for a quick change before...
We went to see The King's Speech. I cannot tell you how much I loved this movie! I love studying European (specifically British) history/literature from about the 1730s through WWII, so apart from my bias, it was a beautiful story.

I knew I always liked the things I had read about King George VI, but I never knew the details of his disability, his relationships and his strength as he became the face and voice of England as Hitler prepared to attack, despite his severe speech impediment.

It's definitely in my list of top 5 favorite movies and I think you should totally check it out if you haven't seen it yet!

This weekend has been crazy! I had such a lovely time with J. L. even though our initial plans fell through. I'm going out of town tomorrow for a conference and because I got so piled up with work, we decided to have a pseudo Valentine's Day and to postpone our real one. We ended up going to a hockey game and having to postpone our "real" Valentine's Day (long story), but it turned out to be a really good thing.

On our way home from the game we saw a guy fall off his bike and take a very nasty spill. We looped around the block to make sure he was okay and called 911 as soon as we saw he was bleeding from his head. Long story short, about 45 minutes, two 911 phone calls and lots of blood later an ambulence finally came. I think this guy had been drinking, but I worried he had a concussion or some other form of head trauma because he kept wanting to sleep and couldn't remember simple things like where he lived. I was really proud of myself for staying in control and not freaking out. Even when he tried to hide from the paramedics I was proud that J.L. and I kept him calm. It was quit a crazy night, but I'm glad we were there to help him!

ANYWAY, I'm going out of town this week and I thought it would be a perfect time to do another giveaway from Chrissy's shop Whimsical Poppysmic! Look at this super cute head band!

It can be all yours if you:

1. Become a follower of Sounds of Laughter, Shades of Life
2. Visit Chrissy's shop and tell me what your favorite item is
3. Share your most embarrassing moment haha

Each comment gets you one entry!
Good luck!

I hope you all had a WONDERFUL Valentine's Day no matter what you did!
See you on Friday!
I'll be sure to take lots of pictures and tell you all about good ol'Mobile!
Say a prayer for safe travel!
Bye :)

Fair Trade Chocolate

Do you love chocolate?
I'm just gonna take a shot in the dark and say yes, or OH YES!

Well, not to be Debbie Downer, but did you know that most of the chocolate sold in the United States is actually produced by slaves?

Yeah. Child slaves.

Not so sweet anymore, right?

Boys around 12-16 are taken from their homes, whether sold or forced, forced to live in inhumane conditions and work day and night for you to enjoy that oh-so-delicious cherry cream filled truffle. In fact, more than inhumane conditions, they are abused and often die with in a few years of working on a plantation.
So, does this mean that you're now forced to give up chocolate forever or live with the guilt of knowing what you're eating could have caused a child to die?

Good news:
You can absolutely still enjoy your favorite dessert!

Here's the thing though, make sure your chocolate is Fair Trade!

What does Fair Trade mean?
Basically, the owners of plantations are transparent about their hiring practices, pay workers fair wages and treat their workers with the respect and care that we have come to expect in the US.
Sometimes it's a little bit more expensive, but when you realize that the small amount that you save is costing someone else his life, for me it's an easy choice.

Remember, you have the ability to stop human trafficking!
By refusing to support slavery and by telling big companies like Hershey that you're serious about Fair Trade chocolate, voice by voice you can make a big difference!

Let's go for it! Let's make chocolate sweet again!

(Kind of) Snow Day

Maybe it's because I don't have to drive in it (I live literally feet from my office) but I love the snow. :)

February Crafts

The snow is layering on a thick white blanket over Music City tonight!
Just in time for Valentine's Day!

This weekend I'm looking forward to ice skating, hanging out with friends, a possible hockey game and a surprise dinner date. It should be fun!

However, in the mean time, I've been considering doing some temporary Valentine-themed decorations for my apartment if I have some extra time as well as some other fun crafts. What do you think?

I love these lace votive holders from Martha Stewart.
This scarf, but in red. So far this one isn't going so well...

and finally, I'm hoping to jazz up some of my random stationary... we'll see how it goes!

Civil Wars Show

This week I had the pleasure of seeing The Civil Wars at Nashville's Historic Hillsboro Village Belcourt Theatre. It. was. AWESOME.

I like this type of music a lot anyway, but these guys are so talented it's almost ridiculous.
Joy Williams has been in Christian music for a long time and she met John Paul White at a NSAI (Nashville Songwriting Association International) co-writing retreat.

Do you know The Civil Wars yet? Check them out!

Friday Night Fun

You know what's fun?
Going through a super busy week of work and staying up late enjoying cupcakes with your boyfriend.
Especially when it involves a frosting fight.

Happy February!

Good job, Team. We made it through January, the coldest and (to me) most boring month of the entire year.

Even though it's blowing freezing wind and threatening to rain outside right now, the weekend was actually pretty nice and I went to Radnor Lake with J. L., Jennifer and our friend Ives.

It was so peaceful and beautiful. We spotted a few turtles, turkeys and deer along the way and even ran into some friends!

I'm so excited for the weather to be like this everyday...
just a few more months!
